Laboratory Scientist / Blood Bank Technologist

Location: 10 Center Dr, Building 10, Room 2S217, Bethesda, MD 20814

Hours: 3040 hours/week (Full-Time)

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Laboratory Scientist / Blood Bank Technologist to support essential lab operations, perform complex testing, and contribute to high-quality patient care. This role involves working with biological samples, maintaining lab standards, and supporting transfusion services.

Key Responsibilities

Biological & Laboratory Research Support

• Study basic principles of plant and animal life including origin, development, anatomy, and function.
• Assist with laboratory experiments and procedures.
• Maintain high-quality operations through quality assurance activities.

Laboratory Operations & Equipment

• Prepare, organize, and maintain lab samples, supplies, and equipment.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain lab equipment such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, and computer-controlled analyzers.
• Manage blood inventory including arranging import/export of blood components.

Blood Bank & Transfusion Services

• Perform laboratory testing across pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases.
• Evaluate transfusion orders for appropriateness.
• Collaborate with nurses and physicians to clarify testing or transfusion orders.
• Conduct automated and manual compatibility (crossmatch) testing.
• Resolve routine and moderately complex RBC antibody problems (with specialist support for complex issues).
• Prepare blood components: frozen plasma, leukoreduced RBCs, buffy coats, pathogen-reduced platelets.
• Perform lot release and labeling for blood components.

General Duties

• Learn and apply new laboratory techniques.
• Monitor and ensure operational compliance with standards.
• Record, interpret, and report research or operational data.
• Participate in equipment cleaning, validation, and inspections.
• Provide updates and collaborate with lab team members.

(All deliverables on an Ad-Hoc basis)

Required Qualifications

Education & Training

• Bachelors degree (required)
• Accredited Clinical Laboratory Science program (preferred)

Experience

• Minimum 3 years of blood bank experience preferred.

Skills

• Strong analytical and organizational skills
• Excellent communication (written & verbal)
• Effective time management
• Proficiency in MS Office (including Teams)
