Job Description
Genetic Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary
disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes;
recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping
methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed.
Education
Masters required
Must successfully complete orientation examinations and competencies, if applicable, within three months of hire.
Experience
Minimum three (3) years in medical field preferred.
Maternal Fetal Medicince Experience Preferred.
Certification & Licensures
Licensed to practice as Genetic Counselor in the State of Virginia required
National Genetic Counselor certification required
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved required *
New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.
Qualifications
Computer skills (i.e. software applications for documentation, data collection, and outcome measurement) required
Knowledgeable in the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological stages of human growth and development
Required
Competent to provide assessment, care and treatment appropriate to the age group of patients served required
