The Art Gallery Assistant supports the daily operations of the gallery, ensuring a welcoming environment for visitors, assisting with exhibitions, and providing administrative and logistical support to the gallery team. This role combines customer service, art handling, and organizational tasks, offering an opportunity to engage with artists, collectors, and the public in a dynamic creative setting.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Visitor Services
    • Greet and assist gallery visitors, providing information about current exhibitions, artists, and artworks.
    • Answer inquiries via phone, email, or in person, maintaining a professional and knowledgeable demeanor.
    • Process sales of artwork, merchandise, or event tickets, if applicable.
  2. Exhibition Support
    • Assist in the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, including handling, packing, and transporting artwork under supervision.
    • Help prepare exhibition materials such as labels, wall texts, and catalogs.
    • Coordinate with artists, curators, or external vendors for exhibition setup.
  3. Administrative Duties
    • Maintain and update the gallery’s database, including artist records, inventory, and client contact information.
    • Schedule appointments, gallery events, or artist meetings.
    • Prepare invoices, consignment agreements, or other paperwork related to artwork sales or loans.
  4. Marketing and Outreach
    • Support the promotion of exhibitions and events through social media, newsletters, or press releases (if applicable).
    • Assist in organizing opening receptions, artist talks, or special events.
    • Photograph artworks or events for documentation or marketing purposes.
  5. Gallery Maintenance
    • Ensure the gallery space is clean, organized, and presentable at all times.
    • Monitor artwork condition and report any damage or conservation needs to management.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Fine Arts, Museum Studies, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience in a gallery, museum, or customer-facing role is a plus but not mandatory; entry-level candidates with a passion for art are often considered.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Basic knowledge of art handling and care (training may be provided).
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite
    • Familiarity with social media platforms for promotional tasks.
    • Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move artwork or equipment, stand for extended periods, and climb ladders if needed for installation.

Salary Range

  • $22 hourly. 30-35 hours per week

Work Environment

  • Work is primarily indoors in a gallery setting, with occasional off-site tasks (e.g., art transport or event setup).
  • May include evenings, especially during exhibition openings or special events. Work schedule is 11am -5pm, Tuesday-Sunday. Occasional evenings for exhibition openings.
