Overview Brookwood Community Farm is a non-profit (often female and/or non-binary run) production-focused farm with robust CSA, market, and donations outlets. Brookwood Community Farm (BCF) was founded in 2006 with the goals of restoring underutilized farmland near Boston, strengthening the local food system, and increasing access to healthy food in low-income neighborhoods. To us, sustainability means ongoing improvements to our systems so we can maximize production without stressing our land or the staff. We also provide a space for our staff to learn farm-specific technical and mechanical skills, which is often hard to find! The farm cultivates 5 acres using organic practices, and is located just south of Boston by Blue Hills Reservation in Canton, MA. Job description Our Farm Manager will have general responsibility of running our two sites, 5 acres in field production, and two greenhouses, and being the face of the farm to the Brookwood community. Our Farm Manager will be charged with developing short and long term plans as well as coordination of farming operations. The Farm Manager will oversee all farm staff and be responsible for sustainable land management and production . They will work with other staff and board members on volunteer, education and food justice programs. The Farm Manager reports to the BCF board. This is a fast-paced, detail-oriented position that requires a high level of flexibility, creativity, enthusiasm and commitment for success in the role. Our markets include a 24-week, 225-member CSA, on-site farmstand, weekly stall at the Roslindale Farmer’s Market, and daily donations. Tasks include but not limited to: Creating and executing an annual crop plan for the CSA, farmstand, weekly farmers market, pantry donations and other food access programs. Crops grown include diversified vegetables, herbs, flowers, and melons using non-certified organic practices Creating and executing an annual crop plan for the Seedling Sale in May, an extremely well-attended public event Developing and managing the farm budget, providing financial oversight for farming operations Developing marketing, community events, Seedling Sale, End of Season Sale, and CSA/FS oversight and planning alongside Farm Administrator Providing leadership and input on farm labor structure to create a cohesive, efficient & motivated crew Leading all farming operations including staff schedules, organizing workloads, and harvest schedule Working cooperatively with other farm staff who have specific responsibilities within the farm operation Managing equipment maintenance and acquisition alongside Equipment Manager Enforcement of health and safety requirements Hiring, training and supervision of year round and seasonal staff and field workshares. Foster a positive working environment for staff and volunteers with a community-minded focus Works with the Board of Directors and staff on presentation, maintenance, strategy and engaging the Brookwood community Farm labor such as seeding, weeding, transplanting, harvest, wash and pack, field cleanup, tractor operations, and other tasks will be performed alongside staff on a daily basis in this role. The Farm Manager position is very hands on and not to be considered a desk job during March-November Background: The ideal candidate has 5+ seasons of vegetable growing experience, 3 years of leadership experience, basic knowledge of tractors and equipment, management experience with staff and volunteers, experience prioritizing projects, and a commitment to BCF’s mission and purpose. Driver’s license, ability to safely lift and carry 50 lbs, a positive attitude, attention to detail, and ability to work efficiently are essential. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is a plus. Duration: 5 days a week, with rotating weekend greenhouse duty when necessary. Core hours are 7 am - 4 pm during the main season with extra hours as needed at the peak of the season, with fewer hours in spring, fall, and winter. This is a full time salaried position. Compensation: Compensation includes an annual salary of $60,000, mid-season and end-of-season bonuses based on budgetary markers, a monthly healthcare stipend, a yearly education stipend, a yearly gear stipend, a generous PTO package, free farm produce and flowers, and wholesale cost of bought-in products. This position has an anticipated start date of mid-December 2025.
